Free agent quarterback Byron Leftwich was at Redskins Park on Friday and worked out for team officials.

Leftwich would compete for a backup job to Jason Campbell if he signed with the Redskins, team officials said.

Leftwich, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, is a 6-year NFL veteran. He saw action in five games as a backup to Ben Roethlisberger and completed 21-of-36 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

Leftwich was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round (8th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft.

He started four years for Jacksonville and then was released in favor of current starter David Garrard.

Leftwich was with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 before signing with the Steelers last year.

For his career, Leftwich has completed 842-of-1,438 passes for 9,468 yards, 54 touchdowns and 38 interceptions. His QB rating is 80.3.

Leftwich grew up in Washington, D.C., and was a Redskins fan as a youth. He remembers sneaking into games at RFK Stadium as a boy during the late 1980s.

He has had two memorable games at FedExField.

In an October 2006 contest between the Redskins and Jaguars, Leftwich completed 20-of-34 passes for 290 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. It wasn’t enough, though, as the Redskins defeated the Jaguars 36-30 in overtime.

Last year, Leftwich came in for an injured Roethlisberger and helped guide the Steelers to a 23-6 win on Monday Night Football. Leftwich completed 7-of-10 passes for 129 yards and one touchdown.
