The Washington Redskins announced today that head football coaches Bruce Hanson of Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va., Chris Scott of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Joe Mangano of North Stafford High School in Stafford, Va., and Hank Sawyer of Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Va., are the Redskins High School Coach of the Week for the weeks of Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 5 and Nov. 12 respectively.
Head Coach Bruce Hanson
“I have never seen a coach more loyal to his players,” said Director of Student Activities Mike Krulfeld. “Being in this position for 10 years, the luckiest thing that has happened to me is not having to hire another head football coach.”
To increase players’ safety on the field, Hanson enacted a policy four years ago that limits “hard, full-speed hitting” to a maximum of one practice per week. During this season alone, less than four concussions have occurred during practices.
Head Coach Chris Scott
Upon graduating from college, Coach Scott, an alumnus of Ocean Lakes High School and varsity football letter winner, returned to the school first as an assistant coach for the varsity football team and then eventually earned the head coaching position five years ago.
“He is a respected coach, teacher and mentor,” said Director of Student Activities John Williams, who also considers Scott an exceptional motivational speaker. “He has incredible energy and stamina to encourage his young athletes, and continues to develop programs to help encourage his players to be healthy, well-rounded young men.”
On the field, Scott has led the Dolphins to an overall record of 9-1. Off the field, his team is active in community service, visiting local clinics and running mini football camps for children.
Head Coach Joe Mangano
As a two-time Commonwealth District Coach of the Year, Coach Mangano has led the North Stafford Wolverines to a 9-1 season, earning his team the title of co-champions of the Commonwealth District and a No. 1 seed and first-round bye in the divisional playoffs.
Football aside, Mangano remains active in the community, having provided food and toys for a family in need for the past four Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
His personal service initiative translates to his team’s participation in Toys for Tots at the annual year-end banquet, where players and coaches have donated hundreds of toys over the past four years, Assistant Principal for Activities Margaret Lowry said.
Head Coach Hank Sawyer
In his 12th year as head coach, Coach Sawyer leads the undefeated Mighty Titans into the second round of the divisional playoffs. In all but one game, the team led by such large margins that the scoreboard maintained a running clock in the second halves.
During the summer, Sawyer hosts a weekly, non-contact passing league at Lake Taylor, where players of all positions compete in 7-on-7 scrimmages to improve their agility skills. He also serves as a mentor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“He really reaches out and makes sure that each kid is taken care of seven days a week, 365 days a year,” said Athletic Director Bobby Pannenbacker. “He always has their best interest in mind.”
Redskins High School Coach of the Week
The Redskins High School Coach of the Week program is designed to recognize and reward excellence in high school football coaching.
Each week during the 2012 high school football season, the Redskins will select one area high school head football coach as the Redskins High School Coach of the Week. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment toward promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes, his overall community involvement and overall team performance and record.
Each of the coaches chosen throughout the high school season will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to their football program and a framed certificate signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Redskins Head Coach/Executive Vice President Mike Shanahan and Redskins Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen.
